Charity

Day 8 – What is charity, and what does it have to do with spirituality? Let us take a close look at it and see exactly what the connection is, if any.

According to Dictionary.com charity is generous actions or donations to aid the poor, ill, or helpless. So generous actions are what charity is all about. Generous actions are spiritual in nature because it boosts our self-esteem when we are generous. We feel like we have contributed something to the universe, and we truly have. Knowing this, and feeling good about what we have done, boosts our self-confidence also. We become aware of the fact that we are part of what is good in the world. That gives us a sense of belonging to the greater good, which inspires us to do even more charitable acts.

Donations to aid the poor, ill, or helpless was mentioned in the definition of charity. We have plenty of opportunities to donate our time and money due to all the poor people in the world. And there are many ill, both in and out of the hospital. Of course, there are many people in some sort of helpless situation also. We know folks who fit into these categories. What are we doing to help them?

I like to volunteer my time to lead meetings or groups to help those that are struggling in some way. I also like to give spiritual counseling to help folks find some sort of peace with God.

Meditation for today: I can help others by being charitable. I only need to be willing and many opportunities to help will become obvious.

Prayer for today: God, help me to demonstrate charity whenever I can.
