One Day At A Time

Day 21 – I have heard it said that if we have one foot in tomorrow and one foot in yesterday we crap all over today. I understand that. I learned a long time ago that we can’t change the past, nor can we accurately predict the future all the time.

When we look back at our yesterdays we usually are into regret and that causes sadness, and if we are worrying about tomorrow then that leaves no room for peace to happen today. Most of the things we worry about do not happen, so it doesn’t help us to worry.

I also learned that it is always today. Yesterday is gone, and when tomorrow gets here, we will be calling it today, so we need to live the reality of today. If I can find peace and happiness right here and right now then I am a happy man, for truly, right here and right now is where I am and where my reality is. This right here and right now is my world. All else is abstract.

If I am living one day at a time I am looking after things that are relevant, and I am not trying to project my imagination into the future, and probably make plans in response to something that may not happen. I can stay in the real world.

If I am living one day at a time I can pay attention to my feelings, and evaluate if they are accurately leading me to respond appropriately to my present reality. If I am not careful I can overreact due to feelings that come from a broken place in my personality. Memories of hurt a long time ago.

If I stay in today then I don’t have to make a contingency plan for each and every one of my “what ifs” that come to mind. Most of those “what ifs” do not materialize.

Meditation for today: I need to practice living one day at a time.

Prayer for today: Lord, please help me to take one day at a time.
