Spirituality

Some folks don’t know exactly what spirituality is and what it isn’t, so I will try to clarify the definition here in this brief meditation. The main thing I want you to understand is that spirituality and religion are not the same thing. Spirituality is not religion and religion is not spirituality.

Religion is a set of beliefs about a Supreme Being held in common by a large group of people. For example, Roman Catholics accept the same concept of God, angels and demons. In addition, they officially joined the church. They are on the list of official members.

Spirituality is choosing to be a part of something bigger than ourselves, something powerful, sometimes referred to as a Higher Power, Creator, or Grand Architect of the Universe. In spirituality, there are no set beliefs and rules. No “thou shalt or thou shalt nots.” Spiritual people need not agree on beliefs. There are millions of spiritual people around the world, with many different beliefs.

I have studied religions and spirituality all my adult life. I have learned many things about various religions and paths, and my spiritual makeup has been influenced by practices and ideas from many belief systems. I have learned from Christianity, Wicca, Hinduism, Voodoo, etc. I am, however, a born again Christian and legally ordained Christian minister.

Meditation for today: I choose to pray and meditate daily. I choose to connect with God throughout the day, usually by just saying, “Please guide and protect me,” or “Thank you.”

Prayer for today: Help me to remember I do not need to understand You; all I need to do is trust You.
