President Trump intends to reclaim the Panama Canal

In a striking move during his inauguration today, President Donald Trump declared his intention to reclaim the Panama Canal, asserting that the 1977 Torrijos-Carter Treaties, which transferred control of the canal to Panama, were a “foolish gift that should never have been made.” He criticized Panama for allegedly overcharging American vessels and claimed that China now operates the canal, stating, “We’re taking it back.”

Panama’s President José Raúl Mulino promptly refuted these assertions, emphasizing Panama’s sovereignty over the canal and denying any foreign interference. The Panama Canal Authority also reaffirmed that all ships, including those from the U.S., are subject to the same fees and regulations, maintaining the canal’s neutrality.

This development has raised concerns about a resurgence of U.S. imperialism and the potential destabilization of international agreements. Trump’s rhetoric not only challenges Panama’s autonomy but also signals a broader agenda of territorial expansion, as evidenced by his expressed interest in acquiring Greenland and even annexing Canada.

In a plutocratic dystopian society, where wealth and power are concentrated in the hands of a few, such actions underscore the dangers of unchecked authority. The Panama Canal, a vital conduit for global trade, symbolizes international cooperation and respect for sovereignty. Attempts to unilaterally alter its governance threaten not only regional stability but also the principles of self-determination and equality among nations.

As citizens committed to progressive values, it is imperative to advocate for diplomacy, uphold international treaties, and resist any form of neo-colonialism. The lessons of history remind us that imperialistic endeavors often lead to conflict and oppression. In solidarity with the people of Panama and all nations facing similar threats, we must champion a world where cooperation prevails over domination, and where the rights of all nations, regardless of size or power, are respected and protected.
